Game of Thrones is coming and here are some of the connections the show has to Wales. The day that Game of Thrones fans have been eagerly awaiting is here. Series seven of the hit HBO epic landed at 2am, with many die- hard viewers staying up till the early hours to be the first to watch it. Surprisingly none of the show has been filmed here (yet) but there are still several strong connections that our fair country has with the show. So in celebration of the return of one of the most epic TV fantasy adventures ever made, take a look at some of the Welsh links to Game of Thrones. The mythology. Dorne, Game of thrones. Dorne, is the large peninsula which makes up the southernmost part of Westros.
It may appear to be based on an upmarket Greek holiday villa - think Love Island with massacres - but the inspiration came from Welsh heritage. George R R Martin said that he based Dorne on a mixture of Spanish and Welsh history and culture. It is a border state that wasn’t conquered by the Targaryens, so became a pseudo- independent kingdom that gradually became a principality through alliance- marriages. That’s close to the story of Wales after the Norman Conquest in 1. Dorne’s leaders are self- declared princes, similar to what the Medieval Welsh nobility did. Not to mention Prince Rhaegar Targaryen is quite a lot like Edward, the Black Prince - a historical Prince of Wales who married his cousin yet never ruled the country.

The film is an uncompromising story focused on the relationship between vulnerable teenagers and their parents who are left in the dark. The story of the film is based on a mysterious suicide cluster that took place in Bridgend County, a small former coal- mining province in Wales.
Between December 2. January 2. 01. 2 seventy- nine suicides were officially committed in the area. Most of the victims were teenagers, they hanged themselves and left no suicide notes. Danish documentary filmmaker Jeppe Rønde followed the teenagers from the area for six years and wrote the script based on their life stories. Bridgend is Rønde's fiction film debut.
