Dead Island is set to make the jump from videogame to the movies, as Lionsgate picks up the film rights.. As famous for the staggering trailer that launched it as the end result, Dead Island turned out to be a decent zombie game, rather than anything particularly special. It’s still turned out to be a solid hit, mind, and with that in mind, it’s perhaps unsurprising that the movie rights have been picked up.

It’s Lionsgate who has acquired them, and Sean Daniel (who worked on Tombstone and The Mummy) is set to produce the project. There’s no further details as yet, although we’d suggest that it’s that trailer, rather than the game itself, that’s led to Lionsgate forking out to make a film of the game.

The game centers on vacationers whose island paradise becomes a living hell when a zombie outbreak quickly spreads. Sean Daniel (The Mummy, Tombstone, Dazed and Confused) will lead the film's production through his Sean Daniel Company. He will be joined by Stefan Sonnenfeld, who has worked on post- production for filmmakers including Jj Abrams, Michael Bay and Gore Verbinski. The film is said to be inspired by Dead Island's dramatic announcement trailer, and will be "an innovation of the zombie genre because of its focus on human emotion, family ties and non- linear storytelling". After a fairly interesting and lengthy bidding war, Lionsgate has won the rights to make a movie off of the recently released video game Dead Island, and have released a statement about the film's production. Back in February of this year, the cinematic and powerful trailer for Dead Island was released.  The internet quickly exploded and websites all over (for both games and movies) were quick to show it off.  It was haunting, filled with emotion, story and altogether took people by surprise.  It was incredibly well done, and I've yet to see any other trailer move me in such a way.

The game released earlier this month and to everyone's surprise, the trailer had very little to do with the story of the game.  Reviews for the game so far have been fairly mixed with fans and haters on both sides.  That's not stopping Lionsgate.
