Certainly it was around this time Lionel Wiffen, a jeweller in the building, spoke of feeling “uneasy” and that the place was being watched. The planning proper appears to have begun at The Castle pub in Islington mid- January. Using mobile phone and vehicle- tracking data, police were able to establish that ringleaders Jones, Collins and Perkins began meeting at the trendy gastropub, usually on busy Friday nights. Jones would usually call Wood the next day to keep him updated on their plans.

Just a few hours after the security guards at the Hatton Garden Safe Deposit Ltd left, the gang assembled. Brian Reader, 7. 6, the eldest of the gang took two buses, even using someone else’s Freedom Pass - which provides free travel for the over 6.
The others arrive in a white van. John Collins, 7. 5, drove and initially parked up on Leather Lane around the corner from 8. Hatton Garden. First Danny Jones, 6.
Carl Wood, 5. 8, got out and walked up and down Greville Street where there is an entrance into Hatton Garden courtyard, checking out the building. Neighbouring jeweller Lionel Wiffen, locked up and finally left the building. The gang were watching and now their slick plan went into action.
Although a number of CCTV systems covering the area were stolen, the thieves missed one placed above a fire exit which caught much of the action. Street CCTV also captured some of the key moments. First, a red- haired thief, who has not been identified and has become known only as ‘Basil’, walked from Greville St and gained entrance to main doors of 8. Hatton Garden. Hatton Garden. Wood and Jones got out the van and Jones came to stand opposite the fire exit door by a telephone box. He appeared to have something to his ear, possibly a walkie- talkie which would explain the lack of mobile phone activity by the gang during the raid. They then appeared to return to the van.
How did ‘Basil’ gain entry? CCTV still image released shows a suspect wanted by police in connection with the Easter burglary at Hatton Garden Safety Deposit (Image: Sunday Mirror)The main wooden doors were secured with a mortise latch which locked automatically when the doors were slammed shut. Immediately behind, there was a magnetic glass door, opened with a four- digit pin- code outside business hours (i. All tenants of the building had a key for the main doors and knew the four- digit pin. As there was no sign of forced entry, police suggested during the trial, Basil must have had keys and known the pincode. The main building key was one which could be easily copied by a locksmith, the court heard.
Hatton Garden. Experts also suggested it might have been possible to open the magnetic glass door by either covering the magnetic contacts or by ‘rippling’ (violently pushing and pulling them). What happened next? No one knows for certain - but what police found later left some clues. Once inside, the lift car was moved to the second floor and was disabled: the door sensor was left hanging off so that the doors would remain open. This opened a short drop down the shaft from the ground floor to the basement; at the bottom, the shutters were then pulled open on the inside.
On the ground floor, a handwritten note had been stuck next to the lift, which had not been there before: it said, ‘Out of order’. Metropolitan Police picture released showing first picture showing inside of Hatton Garden vaults after multi million pound raid.
One or more of the four men crawled out of the lift shaft and into the airlock to the cupboard beneath the stairs, and cut the grey, telephone line cable, coming out of the alarm box. The GPS aerial was broken off, significantly reducing the signal range. After attacking the alarm, the cover on the electrical box underneath the desk (which powers the outer sliding iron gate) was removed and the wires were cut. This stopped the power to the iron gate, allowing it to be pulled open; the manual key- operated door release does not appear to have been touched.
The lock was broken off the wooden door to HGSD, leaving a hole in it. This allowed access for larger machinery and easier passage to and from the vault. Once Basil entered through the main doors, he waited until Mr Wiffen had left the premises, before he then opened the fire exit door to allow others in. To gain access to the Hatton Garden courtyard, all that was required was to pull back the two bolts on the basement door; the door to the staircase from the ground- floor lobby was never locked. The white transit van then arrived from the direction of Leather Lane and stopped outside the fire escape.
Brian Reader, Terry Perkins, Danny Jones and Carl Wood got out and started to unload bags, tools and two wheelie bins, which they carried (or wheeled) in through the fire escape and down the stairs. Large metal joists were also ferried down the stairs: they would become important.
